Woodland Hills’ calling card has always been its physical, hard-hitting defense and running-oriented offense. The Wolverines are coming off of consecutive trips to the WPIAL AAAA championship game and are 21-6 overall the last two years.
But two of Woodland Hills’ top returning offensive threats are actually a quarterback and a wide receiver. Field general Pat Menifee hit 43-of-75 passes for 790 yards and 11 touchdowns and wide receiver Shakim Alonzo, the turquoise and black’s featured target, hauled in 23 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 22.3 yards per reception. Woodland Hills has boasted a back with at least 1,400 rushing yards each of the last two seasons (Dom Timbers, 2009 & Lafayette Pitts, 2010), and the Wolverines will miss Pitts’ 1,700+ yards and blocking back Alfonzo Strozier. But offensive linemen Jawan Turner and Mike Steals return to help pave the way for a unit which averaged 26.2 points per game a season ago.
Defensively, Mike Caprara led the team in tackles last season with 120 and also posted eight sacks. The senior linebacker is a potential Division-1 prospect. Linebacker Alex Beasley and defensive back Jason Peterson also return to help lead the Woodland Hills’ defense. Kicker Sam Scifo, who has received some D-1 interest, converted 42 extra points and six field goals in his junior season.
