The Road to Hershey: 2018 Playoff Picture Week 8
Written by: Billy Splain on Wednesday, October 17th, 2018
I can’t believe it. Most teams have played 8 games. The playoffs are right around the corner, and very few questions have been answered. Statewide we STILL have 35 undefeated teams, followed up by a whopping 58 one loss teams. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get right into the discussion:
6A – 33 D1 Teams / 16 Teams Qualify for D1 Playoffs / D1 Champion advances to PIAA Semi-finals
Right now it looks like the top ten are set. North Penn, Coatesville and Garnett Valley lead the way at 8-0. DW, Truman, Spring-Ford, DE, Haverford, Perk Valley and Upper Darby fill out the top ten. The rest are sitting on rented space, Quakertown 6 2, Neshaminy 5 3, CRS 5-3, OJR 5-2, Pennsbury 4-4 and Souderton 4-4 fill out the bracket…FOR NOW…
At this point with 2 games left those teams will be jockeying for position. Outside looking in are CB East, Avon Grove, Hatboro-Horsham, Pennridge, Ridley, Souderton and Abington. Avon Grove looks to be the farthest out as they face Coatesville this weekend.
Key games this weekend are Abington/Pennsbury, Souderton facing CBW, Ridley at 7-2 Penncrest. Interesting games, Quakertown sitting at 11 has to face both Pennridge and Hatboro who are both fighting for their playoff lives.
5A 25 D1 Teams / 16 Teams Qualify for D1 Playoffs / D1 Champion advances to PIAA Semi-finals
Unlike 6A, there are only 6 teams controlling the field. Penn Wood, Upper Dublin, Academy Park, Radnor, Delco and Rustin at 5-2. From there down it’s anyone’s game right down to 3-5 Kennett, who is outside looking in at #18. As a matter of fact, the teams from 10 down, starting with 4-4 WCE and following with Marple Newtown, Unionville, Chichester, Interboro, Strath Haven, Phoenixville, and 3-5 Sun Valley are all in play.
Key Games: The most important game for top seed happens next week when Penn Wood Hosts Academy Park.
4A – 7 D1 Teams / 4 Teams Qualify for D1 Playoffs / D1 Champion advances to PIAA Playoffs
The top seed here is set with 8-0 Pottsgrove. Pottstown, Glen Mills, Springfield Twp, UM and Shanahan are all fighting for the final three spots.
Key Games: Shanahan has a tough road with D West and Oxford coming up, Pottstown should get in with a win over Upper Perk. UM has to face a tough Cheltenham then Upper Dublin. Chances slim. Delco faces Haverford this weekend
3A Regional – D1/12, 4 teams get in
District 1/12 subregion. 3 automatic seeds and 1 at large seed. One seed is district 1, 1 seed catholic league, 1 seed philly public and final seed is at large. Right now PJP will be district 1 seed, Egan will Catholic league seed, School of Future and Prep charter will play for public league seed in two weeks and we (New Hope) are the at large seed. We will end up being the 3rd seed once playoffs begin and will face the 2nd seed.
1A – 5 D1 Teams / 2 Teams Qualify for D1 Playoffs / D1 winner plays D2 winner in PIAA Playoffs
5-2 Jenkintown is in. 3-4 Bristol and 3-5 Morrisville will likely battle for the second spot on Thanksgiving day.
6A Williamsport (4), Hazleton, Scranton and Delaware Valley all enter the district 2 Tournament.
5A – 5-3 ES South, 5-3 Southern Lehigh, 5-3 Wallenpaupack (2) 4-4 Valley West (2), 4-4 Pocono Mt East (11), are battling for the top four spots. Whitehall & ES North (11) are eliminated.
4A 8 teams qualify: Valley View holds the lead at 8-0 with wins over second and third place Berwick and Dallas. They clinch top seed with a win this weekend. Berwick and Dallas face off Friday with the winner likely taking the second seed. They along with W Scranton & N Pocono have clinched a spot. 3-5 Pittston, 3-5 Nanticoke, 2-6 Abington Heights are battling for the bottom three along with Honesdale, Crestwood and Tunkhannock.
Key Games: Dallas @ Berwick, Pittston @ Crestwood, Honesdale @ N Pocono
3A Eight Teams Qualify. 7-1 Scranton Prep and 8-0 Wyoming area lead for the top spots. Wyoming area has the schedule advantage as the Cavaliers have to face #3 6-2 Lakeland and #4 5-3 Western Wayne. 1-7 GAR and 0-8 Holy Redeemer are “fighting” for the last spot.
2A four teams qualify. 6-2 Dunmore leads the way, 5-3 Riverside is the likely 2 seed. Susquehanna at 4-4 will likely be third and Carbondale needs a win vs either
1A two teams get in. 7-1 Lackawanna Trail and 6-2 Old Forge have clinched the two spots. The Lions have a key game with Lake Lehman this week but hold the win advantage over Old Forge, who should win out
District-3 6A: Turning it over to our friend from the Joe Gilloway from the Linglestown Gazette for this one:
football power rankings have been updated. The Rams drop from #3 to #4 after a loss to State College.
Here’s a look at what’s left for the teams with the best chance to qualify for District-3 6A tournament by finishing in the top eight.
1) HARRISBURG…Carlisle and Altoona. Could win these two games blindfolded. Will enter tourney with top seed.
2) MANHEIM TOWNSHIP…1-7 JP McCaskey and 4-4 Hempfield. Don’t count on the Blue Streaks dropping one to either of these teams.
3) CENTRAL YORK…5-3 Dallastown and 7-1 York Wm. Penn. Both could be challenging. Rams may have a opportunity to leapfrog the Panthers.
4) CENTRAL DAUPHIN…6-2 Chambersburg and 3-4 CD East. Both huge games for the Rams. Two wins and they should finish no lower than #3.
5) CHAMBERSBURG…5-3 Central Dauphin and 3-5 Carlisle. Win them both and finish no lower than #3.
6) RED LION…2-7 Spring Grove and 5-3 Dallastown. Great final week match-up, with possibly everything on the line for Dallastown.
7) WILSON…4-4 Cedar Crest and McCaskey. Will probably need to win at least one of final two.
8) DALLASTOWN…7-1 Central York and 6-2 Red Lion. Undoubtedly the toughest final two games of any team vying for the tourney. But one of two will probably be all they need.
9) HEMPFIELD…1-7 Penn Manor and 7-1 Manheim Township. Week 10 game will be tough. May need help from Dallstown…which they’ll probably get.
10) CD EAST…2-6 Cumberland Valley and 5-3 Central Dauphin. Will need to win both…while scoreboard watching.
11) CEDAR CREST…5-3 Wilson and 0-8 Garden Spot. First things first, beat Wilson. Then cross fingers while beating Garden Spot.
5A 14 Teams make the playoffs. Manheim Central can clinch the top seed with a win Friday and losses by #3 Shippensburg and #4 William Penn. From tenth down, Boone, TV, Exeter, Dover, Waynesboro, Northeastern, Northern York, Governor Mifflin and Conestoga Valley are batting to stay in while 2 thru 9 are still battling for top seeding spots.
Key Games: William Penn vs Central York next week could affect 5 & 6A seedings. #9 Palmyra has a tough Middletown game next week. Conestoga Valley and Warwick play Friday
4A Ten Teams get in. Bishop McDevitt and Milton Hershey have the top 2 spots respectively at 7-1. Susquehanna, Berks, Weiser, ELCO and West Perry are all in the hunt for the top spot. At the other end, Lampeter, Donegal, Surburban, W York, Big Spring and E Pennsboro are trying to stay in the top 10.
Key Games: McDevitt squares off with #3 Township next week. MH should win out. Berks/Wyo next week could play in. #10 Donegal faces Lancaster Catholic Friday, #11 Suburban faces #12 West York Friday.
3A Six teams get in. 8-0 Lancaster Catholic is so far the top seed, with Middletown and Wyo right behind at 7-1. The Crusaders should win out leaving Wyo and Middletown to battle for 2nd.
Key Games: The Spartans have a tough out with Schuylkill Valley and Berks. Middletown has the schedule advantage here. The only real question at 6 is will it be Annville, Bermudian or SV getting left out? C-A has a big one with 7-1 ELCO Friday, while Bermudian faces #4 Littlestown
2A 4 Teams get in. Delone, York Catholic, UDA and Steelton have clinched. The battle here is for the top seed. And that battle is taking place this Friday night as Squires travel to face the Irish in a likely D2 Title game preview. But we cant count out the Rollers or UDA.
1A 2 teams enter the sub regional with D12 8-0 Halifax has one spot. Will it be 1-6 Fairfield or 0-8 Millersburg?
4A Four teams get in. Jersey Shore took the lead here with a huge win over Lewisburg. Selinsgrove, Midd-West, 1-7 Shikellamy round out the top four. For the top seed, Shore has a wounded but still tough Bald Eagle then Central Mt. The Seals have the tough out with Danville and Montoursville. Shik needs a win vs Shamokin or Milton to clinch.
3A Eight teams Qualify Danville holds the top spot at 7-1, but they face SCA to close out the year. #2 Montoursville is 6-2 and faces Towanda and Selinsgrove. Top seed will come down to points. Central Columbia and Lewisburg have clinched while Shamokin, Loyalsock and Athens can all clinch a spot with one win. The last spot is being contested between Warrior Run, Mifflinburg and Milton. That spot will be determined next week.
2A Eight Teams Qualify No secret at the top, SCA. The 8 team field is pretty much set, #3 Wellsboro can set the top 8 with a win over 1-7 Wyalusing Friday night. They’ll need help from either #5 Bloomsburg or Shamokin to keep the #2 spot. NP Mansfield, and Troy round out the top 8
1A Four Teams Qualify 8-0 Canton can clinch the top with a win over either North Penn or Troy. Muncy has 2 losses and can clinch at least #2 with a win over either Sayre or Hughsville. The Battle for 3 & 4 is between 4-4 S Williamsport, 3-5 Montgomery and 4-4 Sayre, Likely determined in the last week.
3A will play through the 5/8/9 subregional. Bedford, Somerset, Perry, Westinghouse, St. Marys, & Punxsutawney will all battle for the 4 spots available. Currently Bedford (D5) holds the top spot at 4-3. 3-4 Perry(8) is second with Westinghouse (8), Somerset (5) and Punxy (9) sitting at 2-5 Each District is guaranteed a spot, so if 4 schools from 2 districts are the top four, the lowest seed gets dropped and replaced with a team from the third district. Right now, Punxy is in, Westinghouse is out.
2A Top 4 Qualify 8-0 Chestnut Ridge has garnered top seed. Everett, Meyersdale, and Berlin-Brothers Valley round out the field.
1A Top 4 Qualify 8-0 Shade holds the top spot. They can clinch with a win and a loss by #2 Tussey Mt, who is 7-1. 6-2 Conemaugh Twp is in, but would need two losses by TM to get another home game. Windber has locked in the 4th spot.
6A State College has one spot clinched, 3-5 Altoona and 4-4 Mifflin County are battling for the other. Altoona has the tough spot with State College and Harrisburg waiting. Miffco has Antrim and West Perry. Advantage Huskies.
5A Sub regional with D8: Hollidaysburg and Brashear have clinched
4A Sub regional with D9. The spots are set with Clearfield clinching top spot. Bellefonte, Bradford and Dubois round out the field
3A Four Teams get in 7-1 Bald Eagle and 6-2 Forest Hills have clinched the top 2 spots, it’s now just who claims the top spot. #3 Westmont faces the Rangers this Friday. Tyrone Rounds out the current top four, expect them to stay as #5 Penn Cambria faces FH and Richland.
2A 8 Teams advance: Both at 8-0, Ligonier Valley and Richland are the class of the field right now. 7-1 Bellwood is always a tough out and don’t look now but the Rams of Penns Valley are playing excellent football. With a win over Tyrone this weekend they could lock up the #4 spot. #5 S Huntingdon has a must win game with Bellwood if they want another home game. 4-4 Marion Center, 4-4 W Shamokin and 3-5 Cambria Heights, are battling for the last spot with Heights outside looking in. They have a tough road too, with Bedford and Westmont waiting in the wings.
1A 12 Teams move forward. There’s a logjam at the top with JV, NC, Portage and Claysburg all at 6-2 in this tough division. On the other end, Saltsburg, Blacklick, McCort and Mo Valley are vying for the #12 spot.
Key games: BA @ Huntingdon and Tussey, Portage vs Meyersdale & CV, McCort/BG next week could affect home game for BG
OK, this is a long one! The WPIAL uses conference records to determine spots.
6A 6 teams get in. Right now 7-0 North Allegheny 4-2PCC and 6-0 Pine-Richland have clinched a spot. They’re followed by 4-2 Seneca Valley, 3-3 Mt Lebanon then 2-4 Cannon-McMillan & Norwin who are tied for #6 with the h2h tiebreaker going to Big Macs. Seneca Valley and Mt. Lebanon can clinch with a win on Friday.
Key Games: SV plays PR on Friday. Norwin plays both Lebo and SV. Macs play PCC then Butler
The Skinny: the WPIAL should BEG Erie High and McDowell to join the league in football. Then they wouldn’t have to have 5A/6A crossovers
5A 16 get in, The top 5 teams in each of 3 conferences make the playoffs. One of the three 6th place teams earns a wild card. Top two in each conf get home game, then 2 of next three. There is a wildcard for the final spot.
West Allegheny, Peters Township, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair are in. Baldwin needs a win vs PH or Peters to get in. The winner of Woodland Hills/Moon can play for the last spot next week.
Gateway, McKeesport, Penn-Trafford, Franklin Regional. Latrobe and Connellsville are fighting for the last spot.
Key Games: MCK vs FR, MCK/Gators next week !!! PT/FR next week. Latrobe vs winless Albert Gallitin Friday. A win for Latrobe clinches the last spot.
Penn Hills, Mars, North Hills are in. At 2-3, Shaler and Kiski Area can clinch with one win.
Key Games: PH/NH next week could determine the top two if both NH and Mars win this week. Fox Chapel/Armstrong winner plays for a spot next week.
The Skinny: The last 2 weeks are all conference games. At this point anything goes, but we gave you those that have clinched. No teams have clinched home games at this point. Again, WPIAL should eliminate 5A/6A crossovers. See Skinny above.
4A 8 teams in. Top four in each of two conferences get in. Top two in each have a home game.
Northwest Eight: South Fayette and Blackhawk have clinched. Beaver and Montour play Friday for a secure spot.
Key games: New Castle/Highland loser is out. Everything else is up in the air EXCEPT we can pretty much say SF and Blackhawk have the inside track and will likely get the top spots. SF wins the conference title with a win at Ambridge Friday.
Big Eight: TJ, Belle Vernon and West Mifflin are in. Laurel Highlands, Indiana and Greensburg-Salem are all in play for the last spot.
Key Games. LH Indy, GS/Indiana, LH/Trinity
3A 8 teams in. Top four in each of two conferences get in. Top two in each have a home game.
Big East: Elizabeth Forward, North Catholic and Derry are in. Freeport needs a win to clinch Friday. Deer Lakes and Yough need a Freeport loss AND win out. Deer Lakes also needs a Yough loss in one of their last two.
Key Games: Lancers/Derry, Yough/NC
Tri County West: Aliquippa and Beaver Falls are in, both have clinched home games.
Key Games: Defending champ Quaker Valley needs a win over Hopewell Friday to get in. CV need a win vs South Park. Quips can eliminate Keystone Oaks this weekend.
2A, the largest classification in the WPIAL. Top four in each of four conferences are in, top two get home games. (take a deep breath)
Allegheny: Shady Side, Steel Valley and Avonworth are in. Valley and East Allegheny are next and meet next week. IF East A beats SV they still have to beat Valley. Shady Side and Avonworth play next week, more than likely for the top spot.
Midwestern: Mohawk, Freedom and Riverside are in. New Brighton gets in with one more win. They play Shenango & Riverside. If Neshannock wins out and NB loses both, the Lancers get in. Mohawk wins the conference with a win over Ellwood City.
Three Rivers: Burgettstown is the only team that has clinched. South Side needs a win to get in. Serra Catholic, South Allegheny and Brentwood are all tied for the fourth spot at 3-2.
Key Games: They all are. Anything can happen here.
Century: McGuffey, Charleroi and Washington are in. Charleroi can clinch first with a win Friday vs Brownsville. Beth-Center and Frazier are fighting for the fourth spot.
Key Games: Frazier must beat Carmichaels Friday. If not, BC gets the spot. BC and Frazier play next week.
1A Top two of three conferences are in. Two Wilcards are then determined to fill the field
Big 7: Our Lady Sacred Heart and Rochester clinched a spot. Sto-Rox and Laurel play for the third and a shot at a wildcard spot.
Eastern: Clairton and Jeanette have clinched, they play for the title next week. Imani need wins vs Beth-Center and Chartiers Houston to claim a wildcard spot.
Tri-County: Nothing has been determined here. Monessen, West Greene and Cal are battling for the top two spots. None of these teams meet H2H in the last two weeks.
For the Wilcard spots, Imani, Laurel and Sto-Rox have the inside track.
WHEW! Ok, on to D9!!

3A AAA will play through the 5/8/9 subregional.
