Thomas Jefferson had a strong defensive performance in this game. They held Belle Vernon to 60 total yards of offense in the 41-7 victory. At the half the Leopards had more plays than they did yards. “We talked about it all week because we’re so explosive so many guys can make plays” said Coach Cherpak about the defense.
Belle Vernon ended up punting the ball on their first drive. Thomas Jefferson started their first drive on their own 27 yard line. Eventually they got on the scoreboard on a 1 yard quarterback keeper by Shane Stump. The drive was 8 plays for 73 yards and took up 2:47 of the first quarter.
After another Belle Vernon punt Thomas Jefferson got the ball back again. Again they drove down the field and eventually scored on a Dylan Mallozzi 12 yard run, that drive was 10 plays and went 48 yards and took up 4:42 of the first quarter. Mallozzi had a monster game he had 27 carries for 178 yards and had 4 touchdowns. The score at the end of the first quarter was 13-0 Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson would just continue to roll in the second quarter they had the ball 3 times and scored on all 3 of those drives. The next 2 drives Dylan Mallozzi scored his second and third touchdown of the game, they were on runs 0f 4 and 16 yards. Before the half ended Thomas Jefferson made it a mercy rule game on a 3 yard run by Shane Stump. Stump also had a big game he was 5 0f 16 for 121 yards and had 53 yards on 10 carries.
Thomas Jefferson had 5 first half possessions and they all ended with a touchdown. “We were moving the ball so well, we started out spreading them out Shane did a nice job distributing the ball” said Coach Cherpak.
The second half was more of the same and was basically a running clock for the entire thing. Belle Vernon did get on the board with 1:04 left in the third quarter when Jared Hartman connected with Nolan Labuda for a 5 yard touchdown. Thomas Jefferson added one last score before the game ended making the final 41-7 Thomas Jefferson. That gave Thomas Jefferson their 4th title in the last 5 seasons. “The thing you always want is consistency in your program” said Coach Cherpak. Next week Thomas Jefferson will play Cathedral Prep at a site to be determined.
