Bellefonte – After falling behind 14-7, the Central Mountain Wildcats went on to score 43 unanswered points for a convincing 50-14 win over the Bellefonte Red Raiders Friday night at Rogers Stadium.
Seemingly inspired by something he read in the newspaper about Bellefonte having more “skill” players, it was senior standout Von Walker coming through with a Wildcat record setting performance. From the game’s first possession and running primarily from the quarterback position, Walker consistently ran around, through and over Red Raider would be tacklers time and time again.
Walker scored on touchdown runs of 30, 52, 57, 26 and 73 yards. He also threw a third quarter 71 yard TD pass to Cole Renninger. When all was said and done, he finished with 362 rushing yards and was six of 10 passing for an additional 143 yards, amassing 505 yards of total offense, all in just a little over three quarters of playing time. Additionally for the ‘Cats, Blaze Buckwalter ran the ball 10 times for 130 yards, Drew Alexander four times for 36 yards and a score, and Cole Renninger caught two passes for 93 yards.
Odd as it may sound it wasn’t just “all Walker, all the time” for the Wildcats. After falling behind, Central Mountain dominated in every way, both on offense and defense. Tyler Zettle, Grant Fausey and Loc Long anchored the offensive line providing gaping holes for backs to run through and sealing the defense off on power sweeps and runs around the end.
Defensively, the D-line occupied blockers and over powered the Raider offensive line allowing linebackers Walker, Turchetta, Maggs and company to constantly disrupt plays and completely stymie the Bellefonte running attack. The Red Raiders came into the game averaging 206 yards on the ground, yet Central Mountain held the home side to minus 32 rushing yards on the night.
On what had to be a frustrating evening, Bellefonte did lead early in this game and only trailed at halftime, 17-14. It was the Red Raider defense that got the Red Raiders rolling when on Central Mountain’s third possession Travis Turchetta threw a pass that was intercepted and returned 76 yards for a touchdown by Doylan Deitrich, who also kicked the extra point tying the score at seven.
To start the second quarter, the Wildcats turned the ball over for the third time on the Bellefonte 45. Three plays later it was senior quarterback Jordan Fye hitting wide-out Nick Leiter, who got behind DB Tyler Pavalko for a 19 yard touchdown, giving Bellefonte the 14-7 lead. However, from that point on Bellefonte did very little offensively or defensively and had no answers for Walker and the rest of the Wildcats.
Next week Central Mountain (2-2) travels to Clearfield to take on a strong Bison team, while Bellefonte (2-2) is on the road at Tyrone.
