Western Beaver used a stifling defense, and Raven Chandler rushed for 114 yards to lead the Golden Beavers to a 30-0 shutout victory to open the season.

The game marked the first with the Lincoln Park co-op for the Golden Beavers.

“It’s going great, those kids stepped right in and had gotten along with everybody. They’re athletes, and they’ve really helped our football team out a lot,” said Western Beaver head coach Matt Gray.

With the expected penalty-filled scoreless first quarter and jitters of an opening weekend game – the Golden Beavers got things rolling as a host of players brought down Knights punter Jose Nelson in the end zone for a safety just over a minute into the second quarter.

Following the free-kick, Chandler ripped off a 44-yard gain, before capping the drive with a 2-yard run.

“The Lincoln Park kids have helped us out so much it’s unbelievable,” said Chandler. “They give us so much speed and will so important to our team this year. I was just focused on going out and running hard for my team.”

“He’s going to be our workhorse,” said Gray of Chandler. “He’s a great kid who works hard, also with Cam (Irvine) and our receivers did a great job today.”

Western Beaver pushed their lead to 16-0 following freshman Cam Irvine’s 1-yard plunge on fourth down just before the end of the first half.

Irvine would add a second touchdown from 30 yards out in the third quarter. Zack Shank closed the scoring in the fourth with a 2-yard touchdown.

Western Beaver held Summit Academy to just 72 yards of total offense.

“The defense stepped up and played well today. We made a few mistakes, but the kids were well prepared and got things straightened out defensively,” said Gray.

Tashawn Harvey led the Knights with 47 yards rushing on 13 carries.

“It’s a learning experience for our guys, a lot of them haven’t played before,” said Summit Academy head coach Stephen Scherer. “We’re still not there yet regarding being in shape, but that’s why I wanted to play this game as opposed to doing this next week.”
