Wilmington left no doubt as to who was the best team in District 10 Region 4 as the Greyhounds cruised past Sharpsville 48-14 Friday night.

This season marks the second consecutive year Wilmington has outright won a region title.

“One of our goals, when we started this season, was the region championship,” said Wilmington head coach Brandon Phillian. “Above all things we try to stay focused, humble and hungry. We’re blessed with outstanding leadership and a great senior class.

The ‘Hounds opened the scoring as quarterback Robert Pontius scored on a 2-yard run.

Sharpsville however, would take the lead in what turned out to be a thrilling first quarter. Blue Devils field general Nick Alexander tossed two touchdowns of three and 71 yards to Kobe Joseph that put Sharpsville in front 14-7.

“It’s a senior latent group, they understand that it is a four-quarter game and they needed to keep their composure,” said Phillian. “We got down there, but the guys kept grinding. Each of us needs all of us. We say that every single day.”

From there the ‘Hounds offense couldn’t be stopped as they scored five consecutive touchdowns and piled up 536 yards of total offense – their defense a pitched a shutout for the final three quarters.

“The offensive line starting with our tight ends Jacob Yohman and Junior McConahy – our tackles Jimmy Reed, and Jordan Gray to our tackles of Alex Ramirez and Colton Richards. Finally, to out center Weston Phanco, they all showed that they’re not only mentally but physically tough. Sharpsville came out tough and threw different defenses at us all night long, but our guys knew the blocking schemes and understood what adjustments needed to be made,” said Phillian.

The adjustments were made and made well as Wilmington scored on six of its next seven possessions and opened up a 34-point lead by the final minute of the third quarter.

After being down for 17 seconds, Cameron Marett exploded for a 75-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 14 after quarter.

From there Pontius would toss a 30-yard score to Ethan Susen while also scoring a 1-yard sneak.

“It all comes down to the line, that what I said in the huddle and they proved themselves,” said Pontius. “They have a great staff and know what they’re doing. They hit us with a few big plays. But after that, we were the bend but don’t break defense.”

Pontius accounted for 237 yards of total offense and scored four total touchdowns.

Susen would add a 1-yard run before halftime as the ‘Hounds led 34-14.

Cameron Marett who led all rushers with 188 yards on 17 carries would add a 10-yard score before Pontius ripped off a 72-yarder to close the scoring in the third quarter.

“It is absolutely amazing to come to Sharpsville knowing that it is going to be a battle,” said Marett. “We had a great gameplan, and that helped us come out with this victory.”

Both teams are back in action next Friday night. Wilmington hosts Hickory on senior night, while Sharpsville travels to West Middlesex.

“We know Hickory is very well-coach, and they’re going to be well prepared. We’ve got a great group of guys, and we’re going to stay true to our beliefs,” said Phillian.
