South Fayette dominated early on in the game, Aliquippa attempted a rally but fell short. Considering how dominant Aliquippa typically is, I think we have found their Kryptonite. Aliquippa began the game with a chance to get the opening score, but after a few runs and a penalty they were forced to punt it.
The Lions wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, Brett Brumbaugh completed several passes getting into Aliquippa territory. After that they hand the ball off to Hunter Hayes and he’s gone for a 46 yard touchdown and the Lions are up 7-0 with 8:33 in the first quarter.
Aliquippa now looked to get a drive going. 2 rushes by Kaezon Pugh got a first down, but a few plays later Darrien Fields is intercepted by Brett Beltz and the Lions have the ball at the Quips 45 yard line. On the first play Brett Brumbaugh connects with Nick Ponikvar down to the Quips 15. A few plays later Brett Brumbaugh finds Dan Trimbur for a 13 yard touchdown pass and the Lions are up 14-0 with 6:12 in the first quarter.
The Quips desperately needed to change momentum and they did just that. This drive the Quips decided to keep on running the ball and even though most were small gains, they kept on moving the chains. The biggest run on the drive was 10 yards by Kaezon Pugh. Eventually the Quips score on an Anthony Barton 6 yard run making it 14-6 with 5 seconds in the first quarter. That drive lasted 6 minutes.
On the next drive South Fayette put together a good drive, but eventually they were forced to punt.
On the following drive the Quips sticked to the run game. Eventually though South Fayette got a stop and Aliquippa punted it away.
The next drive was also good for the Lions, eventually they faced a 4th and 1 down inside the red zone and they were stuffed on a run. With under a minute remaining before half the Quips ran the clock out.
The second half started and a punt was downed inside the 5. Brumbaugh picks up a first down with a pass. After that a big strike Brett Brumbaugh finds Nick Ponikvar for an 87 yards touchdown pass and the Lions were up 21-6 with 10:58 in the third quarter.
The next 2 drives didn’t result in much and both teams punted.
The next drive was a mix of pass and run, Brumbaugh had a few completions over 10 yards. Eventually he finds Jack Relihan for a 9 yard touchdown and the score is 28-6 with 2:07 in the third quarter.
The next drive started with a few runs and finally a big play happens when Darrien Fields finds Stephon McGinnis for a 58 yard touchdown pass, the score is now 28-14 with 34 seconds left in the quarter. The next drive was a good long one that kept the Quips offense on the sideline. Eventually Dan Trimbur attempted a field goal of 36 yards which was good making it 31-14 with 6:29 left in the game. The drive almost took up half of the quarter which was huge.
On the next drive Aliquippa answered, eventually Darrien Fields found an open Patrick Anderson with 31 yard touchdown pass and the conversion was good making it 31-22 with 3:59 left. On the next play the Quips try an onside kick and recover, and now all of a sudden we have drama. Darrien Fields completed a few passes but eventually they faced a 4th and 15 and a pass fell incomplete.
From there the Lions ran the clock to win the championship for the second straight year. South Fayette will face Karns City at 7pm Friday at Clarion University stadium
