WPIAL Quad A Championship: Pine Richland Rams fight way to Title

Written by: on Sunday, November 23rd, 2014

In a Northern Eight rematch, an offensive shootout was expected. The Rams and Vikings played a 48-28 game earlier in the season. The first drive was a great drive for Central Catholic where they worked down the field the majority of the drive they ran the ball the drive went so well until John Petrishen fumbled the ball and came away with zero points. The drive lasted 6:01 which is bad when it only resulted in a fumble.

The next drive Central Catholic played great defense and the Rams punted it away. On the next 2 drives it was more of the same and that was the first quarter. Once again in the 2nd quarter defense dominated. Central Catholic had one drive last 5:21 and came away with zero points once again. The half ended scoreless.

The second half started and Pine Richland put together a good drive. A big play was when Ben DiNucci connected with Mike Merhaut for 27 yards. They finished the drive off on a Mike Merhaut 6 yard touchdown with 10:24 in the third quarter

. The next drive Central Catholic took 9 plays only went and took 4:44 off the clock. The next drive Pine Richland got a break no one deserves they fumble the ball and Central Catholic recovered but an Inadvertent Whistle costs Central Catholic the ball, next play Dre Gastion tosses it to Ben Dinucci for a 12 yard touchdown (and yes you read that correctly).

On the next drive the Vikings needed to somehow overcome a blown call and did just that John Petrishen had 2 runs of 15 or longer yards. He finally punched it in from 5 yards out making it 14-7 Rams with 7:54 left. After that Central Catholic runs on 4th and 16 and doesn’t convert.

Pine Richland gets it back and Ben DiNucci runs it from 6 yards making it 21-7 with 1:11 to go. A last minute touchdown makes the final 21-13 and the Rams win the title and will face State College Saturday at Altoonas Mansion Park at 1 p.m.

  1. Chuck Lewis says:

It was disgusting. The officials took the game away from the kids. Central was jobbed and Pine Richland’s win will always be controversial and in question. The inadvertent whistle and 4 more questionable calls handed the win to PR.
