The Ferndale Yellow Jackets and the Purchase Line Red Dragons faced off, in a game that determined whether the Dragons would make the playoffs, October 27. Although the muddy field made for the most unideal conditions, the Dragons took a win of 50-6, and they also secured themselves the 12-seed spot in the District 6 playoffs. Junior fullback Cullen Goncher said, “The field was awesome to play on. We are all excited to be back in the playoffs two years in a row.”

Ferndale received the ball first. The Dragons held the Yellow Jackets on all four downs, and were given the ball after a fourth down punt. Right after, Goncher ran down the sideline for a 52-yard touchdown, that put the score at 6-0. Goncher was found in the endzone again, after 47 yards, three minutes and three seconds later. Just before the two-point conversion was tried, Ferndale called a timeout. When the timeout ended, the two-point conversion was capitalized by Goncher, and the score became 14-0. Ferndale’s defense was struggling to hold the offense of Purchase Line. Sophomore runningback Joshua Syster sprinted down the field for a 30-yard touchdown, and a successful two-point conversion by Goncher made the score, 22-0. Syster stole another touchdown of 54 yards, and Senior runningback Cameron Yoder ran the ball in for the two points. The end of the first quarter put the Dragons at 30-0.

The second quarter was much like the first. Yoder ran the ball 20 yards for a touchdown and junior quarterback Jacob Barnett had a 6-yard touchdown. Freshman lineman Brock Lloyd, who has taken over the extra point responsibilities, added the kick. At the end of the first half, the score was 43-0, and the Dragons were receiving.

When the teams came back on the field, they were covered in mud. Most numbers where unable to be seen. But the Dragons and the Yellow Jackets persisted on. The passing game for both teams was almost impossible because of the slick field. The mercy rule was in effect for the whole second half. One drive for Purchase Line lasted almost the whole third quarter. Barnett scored a touchdown on a one-yard burst, and the Dragons’ final touchdown, with almost one-minute left in the quarter. Lloyd kicked another PAT and the score became 50-0. Ferndale’s Tajahi Thomas took advantage of Purchase Line’s kickoff and returned it all the way to the endzone, scoring the Yellow Jackets only touchdown of the game. The score became 50-6, and it stayed like that for the rest of the game.

“Our linemen blocked well and our runningbacks ran well. Our defense was fantastic,” said Barnett, who scored two touchdowns. Syster led the team in rushing yards with 17 carries and a total of 153 yards. Goncher was not far behind with 9 carries and 117 yards. Goncher broke the 100-tackle marker for the year, during this game. The Purchase Line defense played a phenomenal game and held Ferndale to 8 total yards of offense. With a score of 50-6, Purchase Line moves on to face the United Lions once more. All in all, the whole Heritage Conference swept the West PAC Conference 10-0.

Head Coach Matthew Falisec commented, “The team played a tremendous game today. We had a good week at practice, and we knew we had to win for a shot at playoffs. I think the kids will remember this game for a long time.”
